AT - Rise of the Blue Flame by SunMoonDragoness AT - Rise of the Blue Flame by SunMoonDragoness
EditEdit Oh my gosh, look what *Kezrek made for her part of the trade, it's so awesome X3 Go give her some love! X33

Edit - Uploaded the background separately -

*odd title is odd*

It is done.... my part of the trade with *Kezrek ... YAY! It's her character Stryd, launching himself away from the rocks with his breath. yay

I tried a lot of new things with this piece, but I'm too tired now to type a long description heh. Critique is very welcome though! Still need to learn a lot. C:

Long story short, I'm happy with it, had lots of fun with it, I hope you like it Kezrek and sorry for being so slow..! And I'll upload the BG (used a ref, one of my own photo's) and a close-up too, and my failed attempt at painting this with real paint lol

Enjoy!

Character is to *Kezrek
Art is to me

This is so badass! So much awesome detail and the background is so amazing! I just love how you did the detail in the scales with the bright blue highlights and they look great alongside the green! It makes me think of a gecko or other kind of lizard. ^^ The lighting effects are very nice.

Crit, hmm... I think his front limbs are a little off. I think the elbows and wrists should be more well-defined so you can see how the talons connect to the arm. The upper arms seem a bit short in comparison with the fore arms, too. The back limbs look good, though! Those are the ones I always have problems with in my art, lol.

Good stuff! There's a lot of good painting and color going on, you're doing a great job of keeping your light areas one temperature and your darks a different temperature, that's very mature decision-making.

A few notes, like has been mentioned the posing needs work. The motion isn't yet reading, if someone needs to hear your description to understand what's happening then it needs some more work, the piece should speak entirely for itself. Spend as much time as you need to be sure your drawing is solid and reading clearly before you start getting in to painting; if you have to get up out of your chair and act out the action of the character, feel where muscles are tensing in your body, feel where things are being thrown to keep yourself in balance. When I do this kind of launching off motion my arms are much more forwards and my back has a lot more of a C curve to it. Also remember that any time you make two limbs symmetrical like you've done with the arms, it starts to look kinda awkward and posed; try to make each limb do its own thing to make a really dynamic pose, but be sure that they all still conform to the overall motion of the body and create a solid gesture. Lots of subtlety which just takes practice. :)

And lastly, always remember to do lots of thumbnails before starting on your final. Explore every possible positioning and cropping and background, your composition is the backbone of your piece, so it needs to be as resolved as possible early on.

Also don't forget to use reference when you need it, the rocks aren't quite believable as rocks yet, and that touch of realism would make this a much more solid piece. The posing and cropping on this could be adjusted to make a much easier path for the eyes to follow. Always remember to work big decisions to small decisions: where does the dragon go, what's he doing, where does the background go. Then after that's decided and working amazingly you can worry about color and light and special effects and such.

Good stuff! Looking forward to more, and thanks for posting in #SeriousArtists! :)

Wow, thankyou very much for your insightful feedback! C:

Very sorry for the slow reply but I really appreciate that you took the time to help me out. C:

The things you pointed out are exactly the things I still have trouble with. Lhune gave me a very awesome link for practising gestures and poses which is very handy for the thing that you mentioned, that you really have to feel and act out what the character is feeling/doing. I've started drawing quick gestures from the pictures on the website and I will continue doing so.

The thumbnail thing is another thing that I need to get into my head/system, that I don't go with the first thing that I draw on paper. With this piece, I tried several different thumbnails before drawing the final line-art. But I kind of left out the background, I knew that I wanted to draw a cliff-side but that was just about it. And the result of that can be seen in the final piece.

I hope to rework the piece a bit, with the feedback that I've got.

Thanks for giving me a bit of a wake-up call and for your time! C:

The painting and colors are amazing! I could stare at this all day!

I especially love how you did the wing claws!

The only problem was, at first when I looked at this picture, I was confused at what was happening xD but your description cleared it up, so, like :iconjustkeepdrawing: said, the backward motion isn't very "visible" atleast at first glance.

Either way, everything else is incredible, and I'm sure Kezrek will love it! Stryd is such an epic character xD

Thanks so much! C:

And yes, it really is confusing when you see it at first XD But I got some good critique that might help to fix the problem, I'm going to fix the wings and I'll try to get the tail in another position too.

Thanks a lot for your input too! C:

Wow, beautiful colouring going on there!
The only thing that I can say is that to me it doesn't really feel like there's force behind the backward motion. He doesn't really look like he's propelled backwards. But that's just what I'm seeing, and I don't really know how you could do that differently either.

Thankyou for your thoughts about the piece! ^^ I'm still wondering how I could fix the not being propelled look, I tried using/shifting the RGB layers around for a 3D-ish effect, but that didn't work/look so good. Hmmm, maybe some blur might help. Thanks again! C:

It's the wing position that is throwing off the motion, as well as the tail. The tail is flung backwards which suggests a forward movement, and the wings are in a 180 degree position. If you're going for a backward motion, swing the tail and wings forward. After all he needs to push away the air in front of him to move back. This may be a good reference: [link]

Thankyou very much for your imput and the reference! :)

The way the wings and the tail are right now makes it look like he wants to land instead of taking off. Heh, and that's not what I intended.

The thing that I could try is to add the end of the left wing into the picture, the 'fingertips' and get them to bend forwards to try and get more of the feeling that the wing is bending inwards, just like on the reference. I hope I can get the right one to work too, hmm might take some more time because of the rocks but it's worth a shot. And I need to fix the tail too :) Thanks again!

Oh, and I've started following your advice on figure drawing, the site is just great and I've already made a bunch of them. :)

Oooh, this is really lovely. c: The colors and the background are exquisite. However, the arms and legs do look a bit stiff so it derives from the pose a bit, seeing as how the wings, neck, and tail make the dragon look really fluid. That's the only little quirk I see, but otherwise everything else in here is stunning and works together so well. c: Great job. <3
